Stop Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Novasure Endometrial Ablation is a one-time procedure to help improve or stop menstrual bleeding. It is done without hormones or a hysterectomy. It is only for women who no longer wish to have children. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is done under I.V. sedation in office. The procedure ablates the lining of the uterus, or the endometrium (which is the part that causes the bleeding) with a rapid delivery of radioactive frequency. This is done by opening up the cervix and inserting a slender wand that extends a triangular shaped net into the uterus. The netting expands to the size and shape of the uterus, and radiofrequency energy is delivered through the netting for approximately 90 seconds. Then the net is pulled back into the wand and removed. Most women report little to no pain with the use of a local anesthesia and are able to resume work within a few days. Some women report mild to moderate cramping the few days following the procedure, but many return to work the next day. Pain medication can help ease cramping if needed. Light to moderate spotting may also be present in the days following the procedure. Any woman suffering from heavy periods due to benign causes, and is finished childbearing is a good candidate for Novasure. Some women are not good candidates for this procedure, including anyone with uterine cancer or anyone with an active pelvic, genital or urinary infection. A permanent form of contraception is a prerequisite to the procedure.
