Birth Control Counseling
Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills are a highly effective form of birth control that comes in pill form. They are taken daily and contain progestin and estrogen, two female hormones. The hormones in the pills prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation and making changes in the lining of the uterus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Birth control pills must be taken every day at the same time for the highest rate of protection from pregnancy. Birth control pills can be taken safely by any woman until menopause unless there is a conflicting underlying medical condition. There are many different kinds of birth control pills, so discuss your options with your doctor.
Nuvaring is a small, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina to prevent pregnancy. It is inserted and left in the vagina for three weeks while it continuously releases low doses of hormones. It is taken out after the third week and a new one is reinserted one week later. Nuvaring is as effective as birth control pills and can be safely used by any woman without an underlying medical condition.
Depo-Provera is a contraception method in the form of a shot given in the arm or buttocks every 12 weeks. It is 99% effective and works for 12 – 14 weeks. It is made from a hormone similar to progesterone. Any woman can safely take Depo-Provera unless they have an underlying medical condition.
Intrauterine Device (IUD)
An IUD is a small ‘T’ shaped contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus. It contains either copper or levonorgestrel (a synthetic hormone) and is a long lasting form of reversible birth control. A copper IUD acts as a spermicide within the uterus, to prevent sperm implantation, and is effective for about 5 years. A hormonal IUD works by releasing progesterone, similar to the birth control pill, and works for 5 years. There is also a lower dosage hormonal IUD, usually prescribed to women that have not yet had children, that protects against pregnancy for three years.
